John McEnroe Trailing Tennis News Authority on Advice to Federer

With John McEnroe’s recent proclamation that Federer has some technical issues, I would like to “re-link” my original March 2009 post regarding Federer’s technical issues.

While Johnny Mac and I have slightly different perspectives on Roger Federer’s issues, we are fairly close in that we see similar (not the same however) issues.

John McEnroe - “”Take the ball earlier and not get pulled off the court,”

MarkOskar - “Well, it’s hard to suggest that Roger’s footwork and speed getting to the ball is the issue here. He is generally in decent position to make these shots, no different than before.
However everything that happens beyond the moment he gets to the ball, seems to have changed ever so slightly. I sense that his body can be too open, his feet not planted enough to drive, and I swear his racquet speed has changed. That racquet speed may be changing becuase of his body preparation and foot preparation (he’s compensating), which also happens to mess with his momentum foreward as he drives the ball. This can very easily cause that sailing forehand wide…Amplified when he’s running around the backhand and sending it cross-court.”
