Hewitt Reaches Milestone & Serena’s Tumble

Lleyton Hewitt reached a fantastic milestone today by notching his 500th tour victory by defeating Philipp Petzschner in the opening round of the BMW Open in beautiful Munich, Germany.

It was anything but easy for Hewitt, winning in three sets with a 7-6 (8) in the 3rd set while saving a couple of match points, but anything worth getting shouldn’t be easy. With that he joins an elite of only 2 other active players (Carlos Moya & Roger Federer) with 500 wins. Not bad for the former #1 player.

While I’ve never been a huge fan of Lleyton Hewitt off the court, I tend to enjoy watching him grind out there. His style on court can produce eyebrow raising winners, or those kinds of rally’s that still live on Youtube (See Federer/Hewitt point). He keeps things interesting, and will compete until his arm falls off.

On the womens side of tennis, Serena Williams recently asserted her ownership of the #1 ranking despite the WTA rankings saying otherwise with this comment - “quite frankly, I’m the best in the world.”. While I actually can’t argue with the statement, I do find it ironic that only a day later Serena crashes out badly at the Italian Open getting owned in the 3rd set 6-1 by Patty Schnyder.

I really do believe that Serena Williams is the queen of the tennis world. She can dominate a tournament still like no other current player. However her commitment over the years has truly kept her from reaching the lofty heights of the games legends. This loss probably doesn’t mean much, but its got to make her think twice about saying such cocky statements in the future.
