French Open Day 2: Dirt Tennis Goes Wild
“Dirt Tennis Goes Wild”?
Well that’s easily the worst title I’ve used since starting this little blog.
Whatever the reason for this terrible title, I hope to give you the latest of Day 2 at the French Open Tennis Championships.
Starting with the ladies, we had the #1 seed Danira Safina terminating Anne Keothavong 6-0, 6-0 in what was basically a laugher into the 2nd round. Is this exactly what Safina would want? Some would argue yes…Win, and get off the court as quickly as possible. I would argue that (light) tests are good to guage your own game and then work on improvements and adjustments as required. In any event, we can expect Safina to charge deep into the tournament.
Maria Sharapova (unseeded) won her first round tilt against Yakimova, needing 3 sets to do it, 6-2 in the 3rd. Good start for Maria who I think just needs as much match time as possible. If it goes deep then good for her. If anything, this will help her get up to the old Sharapova speed much faster.
Other notable women that won -
- Venus Williams in 3 sets
- Marion Bartoli in 3 sets as well
- Jie Zheng in 2
- Bondarenko upsetting Patty Schnyder
- Marino upsetting Anna Chakvetadze in 3 sets
On the mens side today, Andy Roddick cruised in straight sets over Romain Jouan. Rafael Nadal also cruised in 2 of 3 sets beating Marcos Daniel of Brazil. While #2 seed Roger Federer had virtually no issues with Spain’s Alberto Martin.
Roger’s win will set up a match with Argentina’s Jose Acasuso. Acasuso is a former 4th rounder at the French (2005), however I wouldn’t expect any serious issues out there for Roger in advancing again into the 3rd round.
The remainder of round 1 should finish off tomorrow with Jankovic, Djokovic, Tsonga, Monfils, Kuznetsova, Serena Williams, Dementieva, and Del Potro in action (among others). Keep an eye on Mr. James Blake’s match as well tomorrow which is the last match on Court #1.
Enjoy Day 3!
