Wimbledon 2009: Final Thoughts from a Super Tournament

Well, Federer prevailed 16-14 (What?) in the 5th set to end Andy Roddick’s Wimbledon dreams and there we have it for Wimbledon 2009. Let’s wrap up this 2009 edition with a final 10 thoughts.

  1. Federer-Nadal 2008 will remain as the best final ever, simply because it wasn’t a serving competition. 2009 wasn’t quite one either, but with huge ages all around, there was simply less opportunity for high quality play.
  2. Make no mistake however, Federer-Roddick had plenty of high quality points with all kinds of creative points, drop shots, and epic baseline points. It was Roddick at his best, and Federer looking equally great.
  3. Note to Pete Sampras - Looking good minus the shades. It’s about time you invest in something new! This isn’t 1998 any longer…
  4. 4 hours and 16 minutes to complete this epic battle. This is Federer’s 6th Wimbledon title and 15th slam overall, finally surpassing (with Pete Sampras with the most singles men grand slam titles in the open era. Federer is the man, (arguably) the greatest of all time, and back ontop of the rankings at #1.
  5. Props once again to Nestor/Zimonjic and the Williams sisters for their doubles titles here at Wimbledon. Nestor and Zimonjic played a solid 3rd set to get in the drivers seat, while the Williams sisters simply showed us who the best women tennis players are in the game.
  6. I truly felt for Roddick (and still do) for taking this loss. This has got to be extremely difficult to take. After 77 games, Roddick fighting like he’s never fought before…And he still ends up with nothing (but a plate). HOWEVER, when Federer graciously tried to relate with Roddick for the loss, Roddick very sarcastically yelled back “but you have 5 of those” or something…It was funny in the moment, but the camera cought him with this look, and then him shaking his head…Like he was saying in his head - “You jackass”…Honestly, Roddick, you looked like the Jackass there. Seriously, lame, and weak. I don’t think it was intentional, or I’ll pretend.
  7. Johnny Mac, you are never allowed to retire behind the booth! With so many very shaky commentators waiting in the shadows, you have insight, intelligence, and pure raw tennis I.Q..
  8. Andy Murray will be back. The bloke is getting close, and he got unlucky running into an American in Andy Roddick who was playing in my opinion, better than he ever has…Ever.
  9. Roddick comments post-match press conference - “He just makes it real tough. You know, he was having trouble picking up my serve today for the first time ever. He just stayed the course,” “You didn’t even get a sense that he was even really frustrated by it. He kind of stayed the course and just toughed it out. He gets a lot of credit for a lot of things, but not a lot of the time is how many matches he kind of digs deep and toughs out. He doesn’t get a lot of credit for that because it looks easy to him a lot of the times. But he definitely stuck in there today.” - I just slagged Roddick above, but this is insightful and totally honest.
  10. It’s time to start looking forward to a host of great tournaments this summer that ride into the U.S. Open! How many story lines are there to discuss going into the final slam? Many, many! :) Great news for tennis. The game is healthy, the profiles of its stars are strong, and it’s continuing to strike the masses.

Have a great evening everyone.
