Wimbledon 2009: Serena Captures 3rd Wimby Title
11 Majors, 3 of them from the lawns of the All-England Club. 11-10 career record against arguably the “other” top woman of this generation.
Serena Williams is without a doubt, the best woman in tennis. She showed it today, and especially showed it in her classic semifinal bout against Elena Dementieva.
The two sisters now hold 18 majors between them, with little sign of slowing down. They are dominating, they are the alphas, and the rest are seemingly a level lower than these two.
Bloggers, news-types, and others have criticized both Venus and Serena over the years for holding tennis as almost a hobby, playing only when they have to, and committing to the minimum tournaments. However just this may be what allows these two (especially Serena) to play for years to come without their bodies breaking down (see Rafael Nadal).
Serena plays brash tennis. It’s tough on her body and has to be tough on her knees. Her body type only exaggerates this even further.
If I were Serena Williams, I would consider playing even less at this point, focusing on Majors and romping the competition when it really matters in tennis.
Where will these two stop? I see 25 majors between the two as an easy target.
Did I mention they will be back out there in a few hours competing together for the doubles crown as well?
They are the best out there today folks. Give them a break and enjoy their styles.
