Wimbledon 2009, Day 5/7: The Greatest Round of 32 Match Ever Played

This was dubbed: “Haas vs. Cilic: When Worlds Collide” (it wasn’t really), and when the warriors stepped on the lawn at Wimbledon, the two battle-ready gladiators fought long and hard. 2 days of lead changing, forehand pumping action. Match points lost from both players added to the drama that would become the multi-day 5th set.

In the end, resurgent German - Tommy Hass stood over his slain opponent with a 10-8 victory.
Tommy Haas, the 24th seed will move on, while Marin Cilic the 11th seed goes home to weep in sorrow and dismay.

Tommy Haas is nearing “ancient” status within the tennis world. At age 31, he should well past his prime, but recently the German has been playing some solid ball. This 4 hour and 28 minute marathon match surely should make Tommy’s legs a little weak in the next round? Don’t bet on it. Haas survivies because he is one physicaly fit dude. Haas isn’t going to get much rest here though as he plays Sunday against Igor Andreev, the 29th seed from Russia. Assuming his body is in fact a-ok to survive the afternoon, Haas should prevail in 3-4 sets.

Keep watching Haas though, should he make week #2, he’ll go on to face Novak Djokovic and I’m now thinking he could give Novak some trouble. In fact, this could be one to watch for an upset?
We’ll soon find out!

Enjoy the Monday matches folks, lots of fun on tap:

  • Federer vs. Soderling - Re-Match of French Open Final.
  • Safina vs. Mauresmo - Young vs. Not Young, should be a battle.
  • Murray vs. Wawrinka - This test will only fire up Murray and the crowd even more!
  • Venus vs. Ivanovic - Bold prediction - Ana gets throttled here. It could be ugly.
  • Verdasco vs. Karlovic - Beauty and the Beast?
  • Hantuchova vs. Serena - I like this one. Serena should win, but maybe some surprise here?
  • Lleyton Hewitt vs. Stepanek - The Aussi keeps rolling with his flash-back magic run.

Cheers!
